VA Benefits for Survivors of Veterans

Date:   Wednesday, October 5, 2022

Time: 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Eastern

Webinar Description:

When a veteran passes away, in addition to the heartbreak that comes with the loss of a loved one, the survivors often face financial challenges. The VA provides several benefits to eligible survivors of veterans to help ease this financial burden. In many cases, however, survivors are unaware of these benefits and not familiar with the complexity of the VA benefits system. Additionally, the benefits available differ depending upon whether or not the death is linked to the veteran’s military service. For these reasons, advocates play a crucial role in assisting survivors with their VA benefits claims. This webinar will provide an overview of some of the most important VA benefits that are available to survivors of veterans and advice on how to ensure a survivor’s claim is successful.

This 90-minute webinar will cover the following and more:

  • Eligibility requirements for dependency and indemnity compensation (DIC), survivors’ death pension, accrued benefits, and burial benefits
  • How determine if someone qualifies under VA rules as a surviving spouse or a surviving child
  • How to establish entitlement to DIC and service-connected burial benefits when the veteran was not service-connected at the time of death for a condition that caused or contributed to the veteran’s death
  • The difference between traditional accrued benefits claims and substitution requests, and advice on which option to pursue in different situations
  • VA burial and memorial benefits, including burial allowance; plot or interment allowance; burial in a national cemetery; headstones, markers, and medallions; and burial flags
