Webinar Description:
In May 2024, new regulations went into effect that changed the way the VA evaluates disabilities of the digestive system. 55 diagnostic codes were impacted. The VA added 8 new diagnostic codes, including codes for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and celiac disease, as well as a code intended to cover a spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders related to Gulf War service. The VA also removed 8 diagnostic codes and modified the rating criteria for 39 disabilities, including hepatitis.
It is important that advocates know about these changes to the VA rating schedule and how the changes impact the veterans they represent. Without a clear understanding of the new rating criteria, advocates will not be able to properly assess whether a veteran should file a claim for an increased rating or whether to appeal the VA’s assignment of a rating for a digestive system disability. This webinar will give you the tools to ensure that the VA properly evaluates digestive system disabilities.
This webinar will cover the following and more:
- A comprehensive review of the changes to the rating criteria for digestive system disabilities, including the new diagnostic codes
- How the changes impact veterans currently evaluated under the old rating criteria and those who file new claims for increased ratings
- How the changes affect veterans with claims for service connection or increased ratings that were pending when the new rules went into effect.
- Advocacy advice for ensuring that veterans receive the highest rating for digestive system disabilities to which they are legally entitled under the new criteria
