Webinar Description:
With almost half of the veteran population age 65 and older, understanding the needs of this growing group, along with the obstacles they face, is a must for veterans service officers. In this webinar, we look at not only the challenges this population faces, but some possible solutions to address those challenges. We will provide a holistic view of how to best serve the aging veteran population, including helpful VA resources for these veterans and their representatives.
This 90-minute webinar will cover the following and more:
- Mental health issues and their impact on VA benefits, including competency determinations and increases in mental health condition symptoms that often occur with age
- VA disability benefits for which older veterans may qualify more easily than younger veterans, including pension and special monthly pension (and compensation) based on housebound status and the need for aid and attendance
- Issues involving homelessness and suicide specific to the aging veteran population
- Unique challenges facing older veterans living in rural areas
- Steps the VA is taking to improve technology access for aging veterans
- Grant programs that provide various services, including legal assistance, to veterans struggling with housing issues
- Options for home care, community-based care, and long-term care
